What are the Advantages of Ultrasonic Wind Sensors?

Whether mechanical, ultrasonic or laser wind measurements: all measuring methods have technical limits. While for mechanical wind sensors the measuring element - cups and vanes - itself predominantly produces a disturbance in the flow field, for ultrasonic anemometers a disturbance can be caused by the sensor holder or housing construction. Only optical methods, e.g. LDA (Laser Doppler Anemometer), enable a disturbance-free measurement of wind speeds. However, for this particles are required and such devices are very expensive and difficult to maintain.

Fraunhofer TechBridge launches SunRISE Challenge II in partnership with DSM and Greentown Labs, seeking innovations in solar energy

For solar energy to reach grid parity and become cost competitive with fossil fuel-based generation on a global scale, it is necessary to reduce the LCOE of solar PV.

THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IS ON THE AGENDA AT EES EUROPE

The ees Europe Conference, which is being held on May 30 and 31, 2017, will accompany ees Europe for a third year, with this years Conference Program highlighting a new area of interest: the automotive industry. The mobile storage system sector is booming, and several panel discussions are dedicated to topics such as automotive battery technology or vehicle-to-grid. Prof. Dr. Werner Tillmetzs selection as the conferences second chairman underscores the importance of this topic for the organizers.

YUNASKO ULTRACAPACITORS OPERATING AT 100°C ENABLE NEW APPLICATIONS

YUNASKO recently completed independent tests at JME (Cleveland, USA) of a proprietary high-temperature ultracapacitor system with -25 °C to +100 °C operating temperature range. Superior performance of YUNASKO system enables new ultracapacitor applications in automotive (location near the engine), well drilling equipment, power electronics (near circuit board hot spots) or in hot climate regions.

GridBright to Leverage ARPA-E GRID DATA Repository to Support Integration of Solar into the Nation's Electric Grid

The three projects represent collaborations among a large number of leading-edge companies including several utilities, technology vendors, national labs, consulting companies, and universities. In all three projects, GridBright will perform the role of Project Data Curator to assist in data collection, conversion, integration, management, and publication.

Scientists invented a battery that could work for a decade without degrading

Mike Wehner for BGR:  Energy storage degradation in rechargeable batteries is a pretty serious problem that many of us put up with on a regular basis. It’s why your iPhone seems to last forever when it’s brand new out of the box but seems like it dies by lunchtime after a couple of years of use. Now, researchers at Harvard have developed a new battery technology using a bit of chemistry magic to create a rechargeable power source that could be tapped for many years with very little in the way of maintenance. Stanford engineers create a low-cost battery for storing renewable energy

Jackie Flynn for Stanford News:  A battery made with urea, commonly found in fertilizers and mammal urine, could provide a low-cost way of storing energy produced through solar power or other forms of renewable energy for consumption during off hours. Developed by Stanford chemistry Professor Hongjie Dai and doctoral candidate Michael Angell, the battery is nonflammable and contains electrodes made from abundant aluminum and graphite. Its electrolyte’s main ingredient, urea, is already industrially produced by the ton for plant fertilizers. “So essentially, what you have is a battery made with some of the cheapest and most abundant materials you can find on Earth. And it actually has good performance,” said Dai. “Who would have thought you could take graphite, aluminum, urea, and actually make a battery that can cycle for a pretty long time?”   Cont'd...
