Is 2016 The Turning Point For Energy Storage?

Michael McDonald for OilPrice.com:  In the future, when investors look back at the year that represented the turning point for clean energy, 2016 may be it. The industry overall is growing at a breath-taking pace, but perhaps not for the reason that some investors think. Energy storage rather than solar power and wind power are the real factors that are driving a revolution across the electrical power industry. Energy storage changes the equation, not only in the renewables space, but in the conventional utility space as well. The concepts of spin/non-spin reserve costs, peaker prices, and a variety of other conventional concerns for utilities, lose meaning in the context of efficient and cost-effective energy storage. While energy storage was available previously, it’s only today that costs are coming down substantially. Tesla’s economies of scale on battery storage are well-known, but small start-ups like Orison are finding ways to lower costs in innovative ways as well. The graphic below from a recent EPRI presentation highlights the role that multiple layers of costs savings can play in creating economical battery storage.   Cont'd...

A guide to keeping solar panels clean and functional

One of the outcomes of 2015's COP21 summit was the push for a unified uptake of renewable energy to ensure a sustainable future for the planet. Solar power is one of the most reliable renewable sources, with a number of government schemes and initiatives in place across Europe to encourage more businesses to install panels. However, in order to ensure longevity of the panels themselves they must be kept clean and functional. Mark Burnett, VP of the Lubricants and Fuel Additives Innovation Platform at global water, energy and maintenance solutions provider NCH Europe, explains how effective solar panel cleaning is key to truly sustainable power.

Geothermal Power Market Showing Strong Growth, New Report Finds

Geothermal power showing sustained strong growth through 2016 according to a new report by the US Geothermal Energy Association (GEA). Projects now under development when completed would increase capacity outside the U.S. by 25% according to GEA.

SUNCNIM has Raised €60 Million to Finance the World's First Fresnel Renewable Energy Thermodynamic Power Plant with Energy-Storage Capacity

"The plant will be the worlds first in terms of technology. Designed to be eco-friendly and 100% recyclable, it will employ SUNCNIM technology using "Fresnel mirrors". The thermal energy produced will be stored and converted into electricity via a steam generation process", explains Roger Pujol, SUNCNIMs Chairman.

World's Largest Solar Project Would Generate Electricity 24 Hours a Day, Power 1 Million U.S. Homes

Lorraine Chow for EcoWatch:  The race to build the world's largest solar power plant is heating up. California-based energy company SolarReserve announced plans for a massive concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in Nevada that claims to be the largest of its kind once built. SolarReserve CEO Kevin Smith told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the $5 billion endeavor would generate between 1,500 and 2,000 megawatts of power, enough to power about 1 million homes. That amount of power is as much as a nuclear power plant, or the 2,000-megawatt Hoover Dam and far bigger than any other existing solar facility on Earth, the Review-Journal pointed out. "It's a big project," Smith told the publication. "It's an ambitious project."   Cont'd...

PVinsights: Solar prices except modules rebound as demand recover

Polysilicon prices rebound mildly in this week. All major Chinese polysilicon makers have successfully digested excess inventories in September, as the demand in the downstream has seen an obvious recovery, so as to follow the price uptrend of the downstream to raise their prices accordingly. On the other hand, non-Chinese polysilicon makers are still adjusting their price quotes lower as to trim the price gap with the Chinese makers. Hence, although Chinese polysilicon makers have obviously pushed prices higher, the average polysilicon prices this week grow mildly as offset by the descending overseas polysilicon prices.

Functionality of India's Renewable Energy Policy - In Wake of 175 GW by 2022

India has surely set up an ambitious goal of 175 GW of Renewable Energy by 2022, with solar and wind as the mainstream players aiming 100 GW (60 GW of Grid Interactive and 40 GW Rooftop) and 60 GW respectively.

Vecoplan - Planning and implementation of complete processing plants in refuse derived fuel production

In order to reduce the costs involved in the energy-intensive production of cement, many manufacturers are turning to refuse-derived fuels (RDF), considerably reducing the proportion of expensive primary fuels they would normally use. Solid fuels are being increasingly used - these might be used tyres, waste wood or mixtures of plastics, paper, composite materials and textiles. Vecoplan provides operators of cement plants with proven and robust components for conveying the material and separating iron and impurities, efficient receiving stations, storage systems and, of course, efficient shredders for an output in various qualities.
