The First Tidal Generator in North America Is Now Online

Avery Thompson for Popular Mechanics:  The first tidal generator in North America has gone online this month in the Bay of Fundy, and is expected to generate enough electricity to power 500 homes. While most hydro generators harness the energy of falling water, or the energy of the waves, tidal power uses the energy of the high and low tides. At the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, which has the largest tides in the world, that energy is being harnessed to generate 2 megawatts of electrical power. In the Bay of Fundy, the difference between high and low tide is about 56 feet. Approximately 115 billion tons of water flow in and out of the bay every tidal period. Two renewable energy developers, OpenHydro and Emera, decided to build turbines on the seafloor that could harness that power.   Cont'd...

PVinsights: Strong dollar pulls solar components lower

Solar panel prices continue to tumble this week. The strengthen greenback has resulted a pullback on major currency of RMB, Yen and Euro that negatively impacts solar panel prices as translated to dollar term. In China, as the demand has seen tempered a bit, solar panel price remain quite stable in RMB term, but results a price drop when it translates into dollar term. Similar situation also applies to the European market. Moreover, besides the impact of Euro depreciation, the demand for solar panels also seems to become quitter due to the upcoming holiday season in December. Meanwhile, although Japan and India are stepping into the traditional hot season, the improved demand and prices in solar module prices in regional currency could hardly to balance off the impacts of strong dollar. In US, solar panel prices continue to slump due to intensified price competition by solar module makers.

DOE study Confirms Vast Untapped Energy and Jobs Potential for Distributed Wind Energy Systems

Today the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), under the direction and funding of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), released a first ever technical and economic analysis of distributed wind powers potential in the U.S. Distributed wind typically means smaller wind turbines installed at homes, farms, businesses, and public facilities where they serve to reduce consumers electric bills. The key finding in the new study is that distributed wind could be installed at millions of locations nationwide and has the technical potential to power the entire U.S. electrical system.

Waste-to-Energy market continues strong growth

Throughout the world, about 128 new plants will be commissioned in 2015 and 2016. Most of this increase will happen in Asia, which is becoming ever more important as a market region. However, the European market also shows some signs of revival.

Industry to label itself as 'Net Zero Plus'

Renewable energy industry group adopts new focus for marketing.

Steven R. Mann elected President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Global Clean Energy Inc.

Mr. Mann stated in his direction for the company "It is imperative that we remain laser focused on our core mission, which is based on converting waste to high value products. With the extensive knowledge of our founders, who designed and built pyrolysis technology for the Canadian government to convert waste to fuel, it is my intention to build on that knowledge base to successfully develop waste to fuel projects starting with our first Tires to Fuel and Carbon Black project in Illinois currently under review by funding entities. Other potential projects under this umbrella will include alternative fuels including algae. Although the fuel price recession of the last few years has delayed our first project we remain optimistic that fuel prices have stabilized and funding groups are now expressing interest again in our Tires to Fuel and Carbon Black project."

Solar reverses amid strong dollar and demand concern

Due to the recent turmoil on foreign exchange market, strong dollar has dragged down overall solar panel prices to decline this week. In China, although the demand seems solid, the attempts to raise the price quotes only have limited success. Such demand improvement is not strong enough for PV developers to accept the price hike that have many solar module makers to suffer with eroded margins. Moreover, due to the RMB depreciation, the slight price improvement in RMB term has been hindered in USD terms. Meanwhile, the strengthened greenback has also suppressed solar panel prices in Japan as Yen weakens. Solar panel prices in EU have plateaued in euro, but reflect a price drop in USD term. On the other hand, the persistent pressure continues to build on the solar panel prices in the US, following the rising speculation of stagnate US demand and the uncertain atmosphere around the Presidential Election. Consequently, overall solar panel prices perform a drop this week.
