KeraCel is developing its ceramic solid-state batteries using proprietary additive manufacturing 3D printing technology resulting in unique monolithic structure. The unique structure allows for greatly increasing battery energy density, and producing safer and longer lasting
FN Media Group Presents OilPrice.com News Commentary: The rock is pegmatite… And some pegmatite contain abundant lithium that have already been discovered in huge quantities in Ontario, Canada.
Now, as EVs become part of the mainstream - and with talk of massive energy storage solutions and advancing consumer electronics, there seems to be no end to demand for lithium in site - the brine is the new battlefield.
The EV market has sent lithium companies soaring as projected demand has gone over the top in the last quarter. Another innovation in fast charging battery technology could only mean good things for lithium battery life.
A new approach to analyzing and designing new ion conductors - a key component of rechargeable batteries - could accelerate the development of high-energy lithium batteries, and possibly other energy storage and delivery devices such as fuel cells, researchers say.
Lithium LiFe stands for lithium iron phosphate, and its the newest revolution in rechargeable home battery systems. While standard lithium-ion batteries are a big step up from lead-acid batteries, LiFe takes it even further.
Today, SDG&E is showcasing the world's largest lithium-ion battery energy storage facility in partnership with AES Energy Storage, which will enhance regional energy reliability while maximizing renewable energy use. The 30 megawatt (MW) energy storage facility is capable of storing up to 120 megawatt hours of energy, the energy equivalent of serving 20,000 customers for four hours. Last year, the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) directed Southern California investor-owned electric utilities to fast-track additional energy storage options to enhance regional energy reliability. In response, SDG&E expedited ongoing negotiations and contracted with AES Energy Storage to build two projects for a total of 37.5 MW of lithium ion battery energy storage. In addition to the 30 MW facility built in Escondido, Calif., a smaller 7.5 MW installation was built in El Cajon. Full Press Release:
Most batteries are composed of two solid, electrochemically active layers called electrodes, separated by a polymer membrane infused with a liquid or gel electrolyte. But recent research has explored the possibility of all-solid-state batteries, in which the liquid (and potentially flammable) electrolyte would be replaced by a solid electrolyte, which could enhance the batteries energy density and safety.
Michael Kanellos for Forbes: The optimism in the energy storage industry is based on soaring demand, rapid technological advances, expanding capacity and, for some, what will likely be a scary competitive environment. First, the good news. Lithium ion battery packs over the last ten years have declined faster than the cost of solar, said John Carrington, CEO of Stem, which makes behind-the-meter storage systems for hotels and other commercial customers looking to shave peak power costs, during a hallway meeting at Finance West sponsored by the American Council of Renewable Energy this week. Solar panels have declined by 50% or more in the last five years. Batteries have declined by 80% in three years, he said. Battery packs hit the under $300 per kilowatt hour mark last December, Carrington added. By 2020, battery pack prices could drop to $190 per kilowatt hour. (In 2007, lithium ion battery packs in the wholesale markets sold for around $1,000 per kilowatt hour.) Cont'd...
The lithium ion battery market is forecast to expand to $46.2 billion through 2023, which represents an 11% average annual growth rate.
Lithium has the purest of fundamentals of any 'commodity' out there, and the next oil barons look set to actually be lithium barons.
With Albermarles new mine in Nevada and Teslas forecast 2018 demand of between 25,000 and 35,000 TPA, the U.S. Southwest is becoming a new hotbed for the lithium industry.
Elizabeth Woyke for MIT Technology Review: Lithium-ion batteries power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. They’re well suited to the job because they are smaller and lighter, charge faster, and last longer than other batteries. But they are also complex and thus costly to make, which has stymied mass adoption of electric transportation and large-scale energy storage. Yet-Ming Chiang thinks his startup 24M has the answer. The key is a semisolid electrode. In a conventional lithium--ion battery, many thin layers of electrodes are stacked or rolled together to produce a cell. “Lithium-ion batteries are the only product I know of besides baklava where you stack so many thin layers to build up volume,” says Chiang, who is a cofounder and chief scientist at 24M as well as a professor of materials science at MIT. “Our goal is to make a lithium-ion battery through the simplest process possible.” Cont'd...
